Pinoy Pride Festival May 5-6, 2012, Las Vegas, NV

Over 20,000 people attended the two day festival at the Town Square shopping center.  FACCGN Chamber member Liza Ochiai, owner of Aloha Kitchen, and long time advocate of the Filipino community produced the Pinoy Pride event in part to bring broader awareness of the Filipino community members who now live in the Valley. According to the 2010 Census the Filipino population more than doubled in size since 2000 and now number more than 100,000.

The celebration included a showcase of Philippine culture not only through a diverse selection of regional foods but through entertainment as well. The Nevada KALAHI Philippine Folkloric Ensemble provided a traditional Santa Cruzan parade which included kids from the Spring Valley Montessori School.  (Watch Video: Pinoy Pride Festival 2012 Santa Cruzan Parade – Kalahi with Montessori Kids .  Video by Robert Henry)  A portion of the event admission proceeds is scheduled to go to Three Square Food Bank.

Chamber members helped man a booth with Juan B Free (Hepatitus B awareness), APALA (GOTV-Get Out the Vote), and Clark County Election Dept.

HUD Secretary Shaun Donovan Visits Las Vegas 5/3/2012

U.S. Housing and Urban Development Secretary Shaun Donovan spent some time in Las Vegas in part to send the message for struggling homeowners in Nevada that help is available.  Citing the “landmark” multibillion-dollar settlement aimed at holding banks financially accountable for their role in the housing crisis, Donovan made a point to identify services available to homeowners facing foreclosure or who find themselves underwater on their mortgages.  The settlement includes the country’s five largest loan servicers, including Bank of America, Wells Fargo and JPMorgan Chase and is scheduled to return about $1.5 billion to Nevada to help homeowners with principal reduction, loan modifications and refinancing at low-interest rates.  HUD has a hotline set up for inquiries from the public:  Hope Hotline (888-995-HOPE).

Las Vegas Foodie Fest 4/28-29/2012

Silverton casino-hotel in partnership with Red Dragon Events & Promotions brought an epic, weekend-long festival to the food lovers of Las Vegas on Saturday, April 28 and Sunday, April 29.  Chamber member Ranier Galgana is associated with Red Dragon.

Foodie Fest activities appeal to both children and adult foodies with more than 30 gourmet food trucks, 15 food vendor booths, a farmer’s market, eating contests, a beer garden, carnival rides and games, live demonstrations by chefs, a tequila party tent and live entertainment featuring live bands and DJs.  A portion of the proceeds from the entire event benefit Three Square Food Bank.

The Southern Nevada Business Resource Network (SNBRN) hosted the Rapid Resourcing for Small Business event today at the Vegas PBS facility.  The SNBRN group was formed in December 2010 with the purpose of connecting aspiring and existing business owners with community resources that could help them start and grow their businesses and create jobs in Nevada.

Members of the Southern Nevada Business Resource Network include the Small Business Administration, the Nevada Department of Taxation, Nevada State Development Corp., Bank of America, Internal Revenue Service, Las Vegas Urban League, Nevada Governor’s Office  of Economic Development, National Association of Minority Contractors, Nevada Minority Supplier Development Council, Nevada Microenterprise Initiative, Nevada State SHRM Council, Nevada Dept. of Business and Industry, SCORE, Silver State Works, Paychex,  U.S. Social Security Administration, UNLV Nevada Small Business Development Center, U.S. Commercial Service,  U.S. Department of Agriculture – Rural Development, Vegas PBS,  Vegas Young Professionals, Workforce Connections and the Women’s Business Enterprise Council.

Nevada Governor Brian Sandoval and Steve Hill Director of the Governor’s Office on Economic Development met with local Asian community leaders to discuss the Governor’s plans to engage the Asian community in Nevada’s economic development efforts.  Governor Sandoval indicated that trade missions to Korea and China are planned for Fall this year.

The Chamber held its monthly Member Orientation and Networking event tonight with guest speakers Erica Mosca, Clark County School District, along with Robert Cushman, Counselor with SCORE.  The Chamber welcomed new  member Bernalyn Gutierrez.
